Breakthrough in Online Education Allows Students Around the Globe To Access Course Content Without Internet Connection
LANDOVER, MD. — Nov. 8, 2013 — 2U, Inc., the leader in developing the world’s best online academic experiences for top colleges and universities, announced today the launch of a new feature – offline access to view downloaded course content using 2U’s mobile application. Students can select videos and course content for download while online, and later access the materials with or without an Internet connection. This new functionality is the first of its kind in online education and continues 2U’s mission of revolutionizing the online learning experience.
“Our primary goal at 2U is helping our university partners provide the best educational experience for the nearly 10,000 students we serve, no matter where they are across the globe,” said James Kenigsberg, chief technology officer at 2U, Inc. “These students represent a range of professions and lifestyles; many of which require frequent travel, busy schedules, and visits to remote locations. Offline access via mobile is a game changer; giving students the flexibility to watch interactive videos, view lectures, and complete reading assignments whether in transit or off the grid, without the need for Internet access.
Using the new offline mode feature is easy to do. Students simply select the materials they want to save on their iOS devices or Android phones. The student can then access saved videos at anytime until they decide to delete the content from their device. Any interaction with the mobile application while in offline mode is synched back to the platform once an Internet connection is established.
