Lessons Learned from Technical Founders

The Summer@Highland 2009 (more info) curriculum included a series of complimentary forums to discuss and address key aspects of the early company creation process.

 

Founder & CTO David Ting of Imprivata, developer of an identity and access management platform, and Eswar Priyadarshan, technical founder and CTO of Quattro Wireless, the leading global mobile advertising company, provided a look back at the early days as  technical founders and offered advice on how to plan for growth and scale a business.

 

As the CTO of Quattro Wireless, Eswar focuses on driving innovation and development in mobile targeting and advertising. Prior to co-founding Quattro, Eswar was the co-founder and CTO of m-Qube, Inc. While at m-Qube, he led technology research and development. m-Qube was acquired by VeriSign for $250 million in April of 2006. Eswar's previous positions include VP, Engineering at Open Market, Technical Lead at Adobe Systems, and various engineering positions with Sun Microsystems. Eswar holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Computer Science from Boston University. He also serves as the Co-Chair of the m-Commerce Committee for the Mobile Marketing Association.

 

David Ting, founder and CTO of Imprivata, has been named one of Infoworld's Top 25 CTO's of 2006, David has more than 20 years of experience in developing advanced imaging software and systems for high security, high-availability systems. Prior to founding Imprivata he developed biometric applications for government programs and web-based applications for secure document exchange. David was formerly the technical manager of Kodak's Boston Technology Center, a systems development group for Eastman Kodak. He managed an engineering group that developed the software platform used in most of Kodak's digital photography products including Photo CD print applications.


Prior to that position, he managed Atex System's Imaging Department, where he was responsible for the first full color output system used in the newspaper industry. David worked for a number of start-ups including Lexidata, Inc., and Delphax Systems, now a division of Xerox. Most recently, he was chief architect for eCopyIt, an internet infrastructure start-up offering distributed document capture and direct delivery of documents. He was a member of the scientific staff at the BNR/INRS Labs in Montreal, a collaborative research institution jointly operated by Bell-Northern Research and University of Quebec. He holds six patents and has several patents pending.
