Boston, MA – December 31, 2008 – City Sports, an award-winning specialty sports retailer, today announced the appointment of Jeff Connor as its Chief Executive Officer. Connor, currently President of City Sports, will succeed co-founder Mike Kennedy in this role.
“We are very pleased to promote Jeff to the role of CEO,” Kennedy said. “He’s a proven leader with a unique combination of experience, smarts, energy and vision. Jeff’s extensive experience in working with product vendors and merchandising, combined with planning and strategic insights, will be critical as City Sports focuses on growing the brand.”
Connor joined City Sports in 1989 while still an undergrad and became President succeeding late co-founder Eric Martin. He has been instrumental in driving the growth and profitability through the years as the company has expanded. Connor will also retain the title of President.
“I’m excited for this new opportunity and am confident that my 19 years of experience at City Sports will ensure a smooth transition in leadership,” said Connor. “Even in these challenging times we’re looking forward, as evidenced by our recent store opening in Bethesda, MD and the upcoming opening of our second location in Manhattan. These store openings during a tough economic environment shows our fiscal strength as well as our commitment to our growth strategy.”
Kennedy is retiring after 25 years as CEO of City Sports and will remain Chairman of the Board. He co-founded the company with Eric Martin and since then has grown City Sports into the premier concept for the athletic metropolitan adult.
“We are grateful for what Mike has meant to this company,” said Connor. “He epitomizes the brand personality and has been a tremendous leader of the company. Mike has left the company in a strong position and I know he’ll enjoy spending more time with his family.”
