IDC MarketScape report notes Desktone's strong capabilities and prospects for long-term success

Chelmsford, MA – Desktone, Inc., the pioneer of cloud-hosted Desktops as a Service (DaaS), today announced that International Data Corporation (IDC) named it a “major player” in desktop virtualization software. In the recently released IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Desktop Virtualization 2011 Vendor Analysis, Desktone was commended for its strong desktop virtualization capabilities and strategies that impact long-term marketshare gains.

“Customers are intrigued by the possibility of a better desktop management model and the operational savings desktop virtualization could deliver,” said Ian Song, senior research analyst, Enterprise Virtualization Software, IDC. “In the next 12-24 months, desktop virtualization technologies will move beyond just managing PCs and become a solution that can provide a holistic management paradigm addressing many different facets of end-user computing.”

Out of the many vendors competing in the desktop virtualization market, IDC selected only 12 to highlight in its MarketScape report and, based on IDC’s rankings of both qualitative and quantitative criteria, Desktone achieved the position of “major player.”

“Businesses of all sizes are eager for an easier and more affordable way to manage desktops. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) promises those benefits but, like many companies are finding, it can actually be very complex and costly to implement and maintain. Similarly, companies that believe the best way to achieve these benefits is with a VDI ‘as a service’ solution, are also finding that moving shared desktop technologies, such as Terminal Services and traditional VDI, to the cloud doesn’t result in the flexibility, performance or ROI they require because they were designed for on-premise deployments,” said Peter McKay, CEO of Desktone. “Desktone offers a way for organizations to deploy high-performing virtual desktops in just days by subscribing to a purpose-built VDI as a cloud-based service, without any upfront capital expenditures or ongoing IT support requirements. We’re thrilled that IDC recognizes Desktone’s unique approach and value to the market and places us in the same category as major players like VMware.”

The Desktone Cloud lets customers quickly benefit from virtual desktops at a cost is significantly lower than those typically associated with onsite virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and traditional desktop environments. By moving virtual desktops to the cloud instead of implementing an internally deployed and managed data center, companies can realize all the promised benefits of virtual desktops—centralized management, improved data security and simplified deployment—without the exorbitant cost or complexities of onsite VDI and Terminal Services deployments.
