The Buyer is responsible for reviewing, selecting and purchasing product that reflects the City Sports brand based upon the Companys strategy and philosophy. The Buyer is product-focused and collaborates with various Departments within City Sports in order to react to markets and demographic trends and shifts in consumer preferences in a timely manner. The Buyer establishes strong relations with vendor partners in order to increase efficiencies, gain better access to inventory and obtain point-of-purchase (POP) and in-store elements to aid visual presentation. The Buyer is constantly monitoring and analyzing category sales data and working with the Planning team to increase sales and maximize margins. The Buyer must possess the ability to recognize opportunities and execute business plans that benefit the categorys sales and margins.
Analyze overall performance based upon vendors, departments, and class
Assess seasonal performance and take necessary steps to improve sales and margins
Create and maintain seasonal product range selections in order to satisfy target markets
Develop and maintain relations with strategic vendor partners
Setup vendor product meetings to discuss pre-lines and new products
Negotiate terms, discounts, co-op, and defective allowance
Negotiate markdown money and returns on slow selling product
Recognize and maximize close out, value items, and margin builders
Interact with retail personnel and visit retail doors to better assess consumer preferences and store needs
Set margins and selling prices for product
Negotiate discounts, terms and shipment methods in order to maximize margins
Analyze and monitor sales data and trends comp versus non comp, sell through, and goals.
Review weekly and seasonal data to identify hot and cold sellers.
Work with Planning Department to establish inventory, Open to Buy (OTB) and seasonal turn goals for categories
Collaborate with Planners on setting proper inventory/stock levels in regional markets and individual retail locations
Work with Planners on scheduling weekly supplies, markdowns, and transfers
Communicate with the distribution center regarding prioritizing shipments and authorizing POS to ship.
Coordinate the pricing schedule with the distribution center
Authorize payment of invoices and/or return of merchandise
Merchandising & Marketing
Establish product presentation standards in conjunction with the Visual Merchandising team
Collaborate with the Visual Merchandising team in planning floor plans, seasonal floor plans, and vendor initiatives.
Work with the Marketing Department to increase category awareness, execute promotions and communicate category to targeted consumer segments
Communicate key items, vendor and department initiatives, and clearance strategy with web team
Bachelors Degree or equivalent professional experience
One to two years of relevant progressive business experience in a retail environment, sporting goods being a plus
Racquet experience a plus
Ability to analyze data, identify opportunities and prioritize based on maximizing margins and increasing sales.
Self- motivated, you find satisfaction in achieving results, big and small
Strong aptitude with numbers; retail math skills, detail oriented
Excellent communication skills verbal and written, especially utilizing email
Works well in a team environment as well as independently
Proven problem-solving and analytical skills.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
Build and maintain strong professional cross-functional relationships
