Position Summary:   The Merchandise Planner is responsible for supporting the seasonal Merchandise Planning process, facilitating key merchandise decisions to ensure performance is optimized and strategic targets are met.  The Merchandise Planner reports to the Director of Planning and is responsible for achieving sales and profit objectives for a merchandise category or categories, working in conjunction with the category buying team. This responsibility includes the development and successful execution of topside and detail financial plans, assortment/buy plan, and merchandise allocation strategies.  The Merchandise Planner must be able to think creatively and anticipate the needs of the business, while maximizing profitability.
 

Responsibilities:

 

 

         Support the seasonal merchandise planning process, facilitating key merchandise decisions to ensure performance is optimized and strategic targets are met.

 

         Responsible for planning sales, inventory, markdowns and margins at a department/ class and/or program level

 

         Manage and plan merchandise inventory positions and markdown strategies to drive departmental sales, inventory, profit, and turnover objectives. Provide in-season financial projections and strategies. Identify risks and opportunities to maximize profits.

 

         Develop, consolidate and communicate a comprehensive pre-season planning strategy that identifies opportunities and risks in all areas of responsibility

 

         Work with Merchandising and Marketing Teams to develop promotional strategies to maximize profitability. Analyze promotional effectiveness and make future recommendations

 

         Develop knowledge of geographic and store performance and trends through data analysis and field communication

 

         Partner with cross-functional teams to communicate division level financial merchandising plans and merchandise strategies to support the financial objectives

 

In-Season Inventory Management

 

         Lead analytical role for Merchandise Planning including modeling product life-cycles, optimizing flow and pricing decisions, and conducting statistical modeling and analysis to facilitate good business decisions

 

         Reforecast business in-season based on current performance, present revised projections and recommendations to cross functional partners and senior leadership.

 

         Collect and analyze store sales trends to better flow merchandise to the stores

 

         Analyze historical data and current trends to identify risks and opportunities by department and class

 

 

Management Responsibilities

 

         Oversee the Planning Department for assigned category

 

         Drive and/or contribute to projects resulting in improved departmental systems and efficiencies

 

         Ensure successful allocation and replenishment of goods by the team

 

         Ensure inventory goals are met through allocation, receipts  and markdowns

 

         Communicate monthly Open-to-Buy forecasts & supporting action plans as well as presentation of this data to Management

 


Qualifications

         Bachelors Degree or equivalent professional experience

 

         One to three years of relevant progressive business experience in a retail environment, sporting goods being a plus

 

         Ability to manage time effectively to deal with immediate needs of business and complete weekly tasks

 

         Ability to analyze data, identify opportunities and prioritize based on an understanding of merchandising strategies and objectives

 

         Self- motivated; you find satisfaction in achieving results, big and small

 

         Strong aptitude with numbers; retail math skills, detail oriented

 

         Excellent communication skills verbal and written, especially utilizing email

 

         Works well in a team environment as well as independently

 

         Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word; having experience with PC planning software like SAP or ANT is a plus
