Koch GMBH Selects ExaGrid Disk-Based Backup for Faster, More Reliable Backups and Restores

World leader in materials handling systems experiences 44 percent reduction in backup times

Westborough, MA - February 12, 2008 - ExaGrid Systems, Inc. (http://www.exagrid.com), the leader in cost-effective and scalable disk-based backup solutions with data de-duplication, today announced that FLSmidth KOCH GmbH has selected ExaGrid® to achieve faster backups and restores and to reduce its reliance on tape.

Based in Wadgassen, Germany, FLSmidth KOCH GmbH (KOCH) is a world leader in materials handling systems for a wide range of industries and is the worldwide market leader in pipe conveyors. KOCH designs, manufactures, markets and services a broad range of mechanical transport equipment and systems in the minerals and cement industries, as well as in pulp and paper. KOCH is well known for the transport of minerals such as iron ore and coal and is also active in cement. The company also provides specialized machinery fabrication as well as maintenance and operations assistance.

“The ExaGrid system is fast and reliable. Our backups are flawless and restores are quick and painless,” said Ralf Kunkel, IT administrator at KOCH. “We’ve been very impressed with ExaGrid’s approach to data de-duplication. It significantly reduces the amount of data stored, so we are able to keep more data on-site.”

ExaGrid’s byte-level data de-duplication technology stores changes from backup to backup instead of storing full file copies. This unique approach reduces the disk space required by a range of 10:1 to 50:1, or more, delivering unparalleled cost savings and performance. ExaGrid delivers fast backup performance because data is written directly to disk, and data de-duplication is performed post-process after the data is stored to reduce data.

Prior to installing ExaGrid, KOCH had been performing nightly differential and weekly full backups of its data using a tape library, but the process was long and backups were unreliable. Each full backup used 35 tapes, which were transported weekly to a secure facility.

Since installing ExaGrid, KOCH has reduced the time to complete a full backup by 44 percent, from 36 hours to just 20 hours. The IT staff now performs incremental backups in less than an hour each night. The firm backs up file data directly to the ExaGrid system each night, and snapshots of the company’s SQL database and VMware® servers are taken each day, stored on its SAN and then backed up to the ExaGrid at night.

“Organizations worldwide can leverage ExaGrid to streamline backup processes and make restores more reliable and painless,” said Bill Andrews, president and CEO of ExaGrid. “Using ExaGrid to reduce or eliminate tape offers significant advantages to organizations like KOCH, who have struggled to protect critical data with tape. The ExaGrid Disk-based Backup System overcomes the challenges of tape at the same or lower cost as tape-based backup.”

About ExaGrid’s Technology
The ExaGrid system is a turnkey, plug-and-play solution that works with existing backup applications and enables faster and more reliable backups and restores. Customers report that backup time is reduced by 30 to 80 percent over traditional tape backup. ExaGrid’s byte-level data de-duplication technology and most recent backup compression, coupled with high-quality SATA storage, reduces the amount of disk space needed by a range of 10:1 to as high as 50:1, or more, resulting in a price about the same as tape, and about 25% the price of standard disk storage.

About ExaGrid Systems, Inc.
Headquartered in Westborough, Massachusetts, ExaGrid is the leader in cost-effective and scalable disk-based backup solutions with byte-level data de-duplication. A highly scalable system that works with existing backup applications, the ExaGrid system is ideal for mid-market and small enterprise companies looking to quickly eliminate the hassles of tape backup while reducing their existing backup windows. ExaGrid’s patented approach minimizes the amount of data to be stored by providing standard data compression for the most recent backups along with byte-level data de-duplication technology for all previous backups. Customers can deploy the ExaGrid system at a primary site and at a second site to supplement or eliminate offsite tapes with a live data repository or for disaster recovery.
