Paul currently invests in online higher education, robotics, and software. As a Founding Partner of Highland, he has over 28 years of experience in venture capital and has served as a director of many public and private companies. He manages Highland’s investments in Avidyne, Bit9, BlueTarp Financial, Imprivata, PerkStreet Financial, Predictive Biosciences, Rethink Robotics and StreamBase Systems and 2U where he is Board Chair.
Paul was the 2011-2012 Chair of the National Venture Capital Association during the creation and passage of the JOBS Act. He serves on the SEC Advisory Committee on Small and Emerging Companies. Paul has been recognized by the Forbes Midas List as one of the top venture capitalists in the industry. He is also the 2008 recipient of the Mass Technology Leadership Council Commonwealth Award.
Paul is a former director of Amp Resources (acquired by Enel), Avid Technology (Nasdaq: AVID),CheckFree (Nasdaq: CKFR), Chipcom, HighGround Systems (acquired by Sun Microsystems), Mainspring (acquired by IBM), Relicore (acquired by Symantec), SCH (acquired by Legato Systems), SQA (acquired by Rational Corporation), Sybase (acquired by SAP in 2010 for $5.8 billion), Vertica (acquired by HP), VistaPrint (Nasdaq: VPRT), Village Ventures and WebLine Communications (acquired by Cisco Systems).
Before co-founding Highland, Paul spent three years in venture capital concentrating on software investments. He also held engineering and management positions for six years in high-growth medical technology companies, working on the development of an implantable artificial heart and the development of a complex visual field examination instrument.
Paul earned a M.B.A. (with Distinction) from Harvard Business School, a M.S.E. Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and a B.S.E., Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences from Princeton University.
