Industry veteran joins fast-growing startup on the heels of women’s launch

thredUP, the nation’s fastest growing marketplace for second-hand clothing, today announces the hire of Anthony Marino, the company’s first Chief Marketing Officer. Marino will leverage a career’s worth of experience in disruptive product innovation to bring thredUP into the homes of millions of consumers nationwide.

Prior to joining thredUP, Marino served as founder, CEO and Global Head of Brand for Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Hotels Group. Marino spearheaded efforts to bring the Virgin brand’s energy and product innovation to yet another stale industry. In a similar calling with thredUP, Marino is aiming to shake up second-hand and accelerate the momentum thredUP has seen around their expansion into women’s clothing last April.

Within six months, women’s apparel has grown to make up more than 50 percent of thredUP’s monthly revenue. The company is putting as many as 8,000 certified items online each day and has a catalog of more than 25,000 brands, making it among the largest certified second-hand resellers in the world. Further, the company is showing sustainable growth, with a 50 percent quarter-to-quarter increase in revenue the past year.

“I was immediately intrigued by thredUP’s vision to reinvent an industry that’s basically been left for dead. The thrift industry, much like airlines or banking or hotels, has operated a certain way for decades,” said Marino. “thredUP has the product differentiation and early adoption needed to change the game – turning apparel, which was once a consumable, into a durable. What was once a costly and closed cycle of buy-wear-forget, is now a smart and open cycle of buy-wear-share. thredUP is re-inventing the consumer experience from pick-up at your house, to inspection and certification, to sale, and unlocking a massively disruptive consumer opportunity.”

Marino’s career working with startups will come in handy for this new venture. Before founding Virgin Hotels, Marino served as Managing Partner at Virgin Group, the $21B consumer conglomerate and investment group, where he launched Virgin Cruise and Virgin Money. Prior to Virgin, Anthony was a Principal at Venrock, working closely with startup founders to develop highly-disruptive products and scale businesses through periods of rapid growth.

“The rave reviews for our women’s launch and rapid adoption among both returning and new users have been really encouraging. We feel a sense of validation in our business model and now it’s time to spread the word,” shared James Reinhart, thredUP CEO and co-founder. “I am thrilled to bring Anthony on board not only because he has the experience to grow thredUP into a trusted household name, but he also has the passion to change the face of the second-hand industry as we know it.”

Unlike peer-to-peer websites, thredUP steps in as a middleman between buyers and sellers and vets every single item, reselling only high-quality finds that are in like-new condition. Further, thredUP is focused on mainstream brands like GAP, Banana Republic, and J.Crew, targeting everyday shoppers and the roughly $30B of second-hand apparel being turned in the U.S.
